In the 1950s when I was a student at the Institute of Design at Illinois Institute of Technology, I met and became close friends with Erich Sokol, a graphics design student from Vienna, who was hired by Hugh Hefner to do cartoons for Playboy Magazine. He became, in my opinion, the best cartoonist on the Playboy staff. Here's a link to his cartoons:

Erich once told me that when he attended one of Heffner's notorious pool parties, he saw him surrounded by a few shady-looking individuals -- obviously Mafia guys. Later, when Erich asked Heffner who they were, he replied, "Just some friends".
