Scott's evaluation was no doubt in large part a reaction of the deification of the Pony Express in Western Lore. Yes, California may have remained loyal to the Union, much to the dismay of its pro-Confederacy owners. I like contrarians. And Scott is one of them. And by God, so are you, and I appreciate it!
